bloodless carving

Sorry to hear about the mishap. :-(

In addition to the other suggestions, you might want to experiment with
Speedball Linozips:



(No, I'm not affiliated with this vendor -- they just have better pictures
than the Speedball site! Go figure.)

Linozips fit into the standard Speedball-type linoleum cutter handle, but
you pull them toward you instead of pushing them into your other hand.

I'm just starting out myself, but I think a combination of outlining with a
straight blade and then gouging with the Linozip should be a pretty safe
way to go. Better for kids, too, and clods like me. ;-)

For a bloodless carving session, check out this webpage. They sell the
finger guards - cheap! Plus tevlar gloves as well.
